PB - How long have you owned/operated your store?
Catherine - I have operated/owned The Revue Boutique and Gallery since September 2008.

PB - What do you like about running a store?
Catherine - My favorite things about running a store is being my own boss. I also like shop for inventory for the store, keeping an eye out for new trends and cool items.

PB - What is a funny story from your store?
Catherine - A funny, cute story about the store happened during what we call Gallery Walk. Gallery Walk is when shop is our town showcase art by local artists. Well, my 6 year old daughter wanted to show her drawings. At first i was not sure about the idea but after talking it over with some friends she showed about 20 pieces with her profits going to Alex's Lemonade Stand. She made almost $50!

PB - What made you choose Partybots Eco-Apparel?
Catherine - We choose Party-bots Eco- Apparel not only for it's unique, humorous designs but also because it goes along with our business plan to eco-friendly. We get so many compliments on the feel on our shirts, i tell them its because its organic, i really think thats what sells the shirt even more then the graphic!

PB - How long have you owned/operated your store?

20 Twenty - How long? we've been open for almost five years, but i've been doing variations of the store for seven years (fremont market, rummage, selling in other people's stores, etc).

PB - What do you like about running a store?
20 Twenty - freedom man. owning your own space is a TON of work, but it is also really rewarding in that you decide how successful and interesting your space is. the more you put in energetically, the better the space becomes. and if you want to coast for a week, and then work your ass off for the two weeks proceeding that week, then by all means, go ahead-- no one is going to stop you.

in my particular case, i also get to collaborate and work with a ton of different local artists, which is both inspiring, and rewarding. good stuff.

PB - What is a funny story from your store?
20 Twenty - can i tell a funny story about another space i co-own (cairo gallery??)

that space is funny, because it's named "cairo" (as in egypt), which is obvious when you see it spelled out...duh. but if you are an angry t.v. watcher trying to contact your local news station "KIRO" Channel 4, which happens to be pronounced like "cairo", and you are using 411, they often will give you our number. an art gallery. suffice to say, we get a bunch of really funny messages on our voice mail, from people cursing out the traffic reports, to ole folks complimenting the weather reporters haircut. fucking rad.

and yes we are saving those messages!

PB - What made you choose Partybots Eco-Apparel?
20 Twenty - i love partybots hand drawn style...any joker can russle up an image of a sasquatch off the interwebs and silkscreen it on a t-shirt, but partybots brings it home with the original style, drawn from the brain, always interesting.

also it doesn't hurt that karl is so handsome.

Fall 2009 consists of Floral Botanical & Vintage Medical/Pharmacy. The Botanical collection was a snap to get done, once I found out about it - I knew exactly what I wanted to draw and the style of the plants I wanted. The organic textures and shapes where a lot of fun to do. Plus with nature - you can use a lot of your imagination to create and fill in the gaps. The second collection for this season was a lot harder. It took me several weeks to lock down the imagery that I wanted to use for it. I'm very happy with all three of them. The detail on the old bottle was a lot of fun, I love the composition on the vintage stethoscope and Phrenology seemed like such a great concept. I sort of made up a lot of the sections of the brain - hooray!

This Guerrilla Art Party asked more of its attendees than to simply look at art. We were to dismantle and then "remantle" a piece by local artist and T-shirt designer Karl Addison in Cal Anderson Park. As I walked through the apartment door, there it was: Invasion! The large wall of five heavy wood doors was covered with white paper and 99 paper bags, each plastered with a different expression. Anna, our charming hostess, offered to keep the piece in her living room when it did not sell at the artist's show in May. Addison—who was a no-show—agreed, as long as it was eventually relocated to a public space.

The party was slow to start, but that was remedied by Anna's penchant for filling everyone's glasses with whiskey. As we sat talking by the baba ghanoush and spinach dip, I realized that virtually all of the attendees had at some point worked in grocery stores, which inspired a partyer to observe that "it's a grocer's world."

After getting sufficiently drunk, the grocers and I were out the door, carrying the disassembled work to the park. The scene was priceless: heavily inebriated guests wielding power tools and a friendly dwarf named Sammy who was wielding his mace—not the Mace you spray, but the spiked-ball-and-chain-on-a-handle preferred by Visigoths. This guy had something to prove. Later, after we reassembled the installation, Anna scolded Sammy for attacking the art with his weapon."

Bikes & Boat Journals - New Artwork!

Bike Color Theory: This artwork was drawn for Art Velo - a local based art show for bikes here in Seattle. I saw the saddles displayed this way and within seconds had the primary and secondary color wheels pop in my head. That is pretty typical for my brain to think of art concepts at everything I see. So, I ran with it the idea and drew it up by hand. Hooray! So, enjoy this little mix of bikes and color theory.

Vintage Bike Couple: Vintage for fun - another drawing done for Velo Art. Inspired by a classical romantic era. Seems as though they are having a pretty good conversation about dinosaurs or maybe bikes. Either way they are dressed to kill - and have the transportation to do so.

Ship Wheel: I like this little steering wheel - a basic line drawing for a friend of mine Ponch. He wanted it tattooed on the back of his leg. The sweet part is I drew this for him, and got to tattoo it on him thanks to my brother being in town and teaching me how to tattoo. One of those situations where everyone wins. Happy with the color version and the brown tones used.

All in all I'm very, very happy with this wall from an Artist Endeavor. What went beyond my expectations was the overwhelming response from everyone that has seen it, been there while we were painting, the press and everything else. Many of the neighborhood locals stopped by almost daily to chat with Pixel.Tron and I as we were working. We got a good amount of press on top of it as well like Daily Candy, Notcot.org and a handful of other supporting BLOGs like Gomeansgo.org.

The 60 foot wall pulls you into their imagination; it is a must see mural in person.

The mural is being produced by two local artists from Seattle, Mr. Pixel.Tron & Karl Addison. The Central District community has many great murals and their new addition has been openly welcomed by neighbors, business owners, and many of the local residents. The concept came for a need to be challenged artistically by both artist and for a composition that could be enjoyed by all in the local neighborhood. 50 plus cans, over 9 gallons of paint & 60 hours of painting - the concept and mural is a reality for all to enjoy.

Sharks Wearing Jean Jackets - Street Installation

Based on a drawing from 2007, new wheat pasted art installation in Capitol Hill, Seattle. Cluster of sharks, really happy with the install and the two smaller stragglers in the back and the one in the front.

Alright, everyone knows that sharks are badass. Well, everyone but those people that have been bitten by one or killed by one. I think everyone else would also agree that jean jackets are badass too. Well, take those two and combine them, now you have a shark wearing a jean jacket. That is super rare to find in the ocean, and ultra badass!

Sunday night was a good night. Was able to install some new art installation in Capitol Hill, Seattle Washington. This is one of them, my Eagle Carrying A Little Girl. A Shark Wearing A Jean Jacket, and several Polar Bears wearing Ties went up as well.

Official Sneak Peak - Fall & Winter Artwork Collections

First and foremost - Jodi is amazing and has done it again for these seasonal themed collections of artwork. Her insight, and ideas are incredible. For me, it is a super rad challenge to try and figure out how and what I'm going to draw for each themed art collection she gives me. I'm also liking the concept more and more of seasonal artwork that changes out and is highly focused.

Fall 2009:

Winter 2009:
The two collections for this season is Geometric Shapes & Street Ware. My first attempt at the Geometric was to combine it with Victorian Silhouettes using a Bauhaus style. It did not work out so well. The end compositions were pretty neat and planned out pretty well using the different shapes - but overall it looked to designed to me and not hand drawn. So I scrapped that idea and moved on to the Geometric Animals. The bee looks like a honeycomb, the deers utilizes stripes as in roads that are cutting their environment down and the Chickens have a pretty sweet egg pattern. Super pumped on how these turned out. The second collection for this season is Street Ware. Super rad 80s cheese-ball glasses along with sneakers and some rad lipstick.

These are going to be mega hot when they get released - so get pumped now because you have a lot to look forward to.

As of right now I have a HUGE pile of drawings I'm trying to get done. Drawing in themes has been a lot of fun and I'm really in to it for sure. You all can thank Jodi for her amazing insight in this. I have one more theme left to draw for winter 2009 collection - then a bunch of bike drawings for Velo Art which is done by Go Means Go - then to finish these Magpies for Matt. Dang - I need to start drawing again to get this all done.

Amelia Bauer’s - Opening @ Cairo

Hooray for Cairo! Cairo is a great art gallery here in Seattle and ran by the amazing Joel & Justine. Their gallery space is having an incredible opening on July 23rd. I will be heading over there early when it opens, then off to my birthday party!

Amelia Bauer’s work considers ways in which the decorative arts throughout the history of western civilization have attempted to organize the chaos of the natural world. The pieces in her newest show entitled STILL reflect that tendency, while also examining the coinciding romanticization of, and fascination with violence. In STILL, Bauer presents a peculiar kind of rubble: a pile of pillows on the gallery floor. Each pillow in the pile uses needlepoint to photo-realistically depict a different car explosion scene from a Hollywood movie. Handkerchiefs line the walls of the gallery. In each handkerchief, a cinema-derived scene of defenestration is rendered in lace.

The movie stills Bauer has chosen to translate into needlepoint and lace are pulled from varying film genres--from romantic comedy to horror--produced between 1948 and 2009. Significantly, all of her sources are American productions. These bright flowering explosions and shards of shattering glass are the decorative elements that bejewel so many Hollywood films. The natural impulse to violence is depicted in cinema as glamourous decoration. The Hollywood machine is America’s own decadence of empire. The artworks in STILL resonate between an homage to this decadence and a mourning place for the fictional victims within these stories.

Amelia Bauer is a Brooklyn based artist born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has been living in New York for the past 12 years, excluding a ten-month working vacation in Seattle in 2005. She is a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and received her BFA with honors from the School of Art at The Cooper Union. Her work has been exhibited at Capricious gallery in Brooklyn, the Swarovski Crystal Palace at Art Basel Miami, Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver B.C., CCA Santa Fe, the Center on Contemporary Arts in Seattle, American Fine Arts in New York City, New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts, Miami Museum of Art, and National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution. Her drawings have been published in The New York Times, the Believer and Warrior Magazines, and several McSweeney’s publications.

Book Release! idrawalot - 2008

Finally, Finally, FINALLY!

After nearly 8 months of working on this book, It is done - sent to the printers and on it's way here! Started off as my "Addison Art Project - 2008" which was a collection of drawings from throughout the year. After creating the entire book for one publisher, I had some helpful insight from a good friend and a much stronger recommendation.

For the betterment, it did create turmoil - all the page layouts I had done were null & void for the recommended printer. So, I had to throw all that work away and start from scratch. It took awhile for me to get back on the saddle to get this project done. After much thoughtful consideration I decided to change the name as well to "idrawalot." It is a collection of my drawings, so that makes much more sense to me. I'm going to reserve "Addison Art Project" for all my artwork that is drawings and goes beyond drawings like my installations, gallery shows, printing, etc...

About: Softcover Book, 72 pages of drawings & illustrations throughout the year of 2008.

Art & drawing becomes my visual identity to all the images that are alive in my head. The aspects of who I am come out in small details throughout my artwork. Parts of my life dictate the subject matter – emotional catastrophes, self image, experiences & my environment all entwine together. The aspiration of my work is to share these visual images beyond my own reality and with those that contribute to it.

The raw basics of my artwork are simple – a few different styles of ink pens and a couple blank sheets of paper. Most concepts brew in my head for a few weeks before they are sketched in. By the time my process starts there is general intent and composition behind it. Details are always left blank; this allows me the flexibility to change my artwork during the process. The originals are stored away in my archival books.

As all good things this was passed on to me by a friend of a friend, then my friend to me. Pretty amazing - love the way the world works.

Moby in this photo by Michael Cerda is wearing my Rock-A-Phone shirt. So there are many amazing, rad, and unbelievable things about this photo. First off, the photo is shot very professionally - and looks incredible. Second, this specific print is done in silver - which is no longer available and was only done as a limited - LIMITED run.

I contacted Michael from seekcerda.com to find out more about the background story of this photo. He was super nice and gave me a ton of information.

"Yep, that's Moby.

The photo was taken in March of 2008 during the South by Southwest Film Festival where Moby was talking about his new site mobygratis which he created to help indie filmmakers. The site allowed filmmakers to used some of Moby's songs (some of his past songs as well as some original ones) in their films for free (hence the gratis part).

At the time, I had a site called The Filmlot, where I interviewed exceptional emerging independent filmmakers, so I was attending SXSW as part of my usual activities of writing about the latest and greatest filmmakers on the scene. Since Moby's new site was a great help for new filmmakers, I put in a request to interview him and to my surprise, they said ok. So I met with Moby, did the interview about his new site (http://thefilmlot.com/interviews/INTmoby.php) and took the picture to use as a header image for the interview. So that shirt is a shirt that he actually owns, that he just happened to be wearing that day. Also since the interview took place before his panel at SXSW, you may be able to find more examples of him wearing the shirt on the SXSW 2008 website." - Michael Cerda

Interview: Karl Addison, Street Artist & Founder/Owner of Partybots Eco Apparel & Art

You may remember this post from a several months ago when I was back in Seattle. I took some picture’s of Karl’s street art, he saw the post on notcot.org, and emailed me. From that I learned more about his awesome art and eco-apparel business, Partybots. He was recently in Tokyo so we met up and I got to do a little ‘urban research.’

How did Partybots start?

It started in 2003 while I was living in a tiny studio apartment in Los Angeles. Basically as a quasi joke – I wanted to find out how paypal worked plus I love starting new projects as long as they pertain to art. The two original designs were the Merkin & Partybots. Merkin was a joke from back home in Arizona – because novelty pubic wigs are hilarious and should become more popular. Lost in an age of unquestionable fashion. The Partybots were drawn for my 21st birthday flier to prompt the crashing of a Chucky Cheese on a Wednesday night among friends. Some lady bought 6 shirts from me off the worst website I have ever created, then I used that money to re-invest in more artwork and shirts. Kept sinking all the profit back in until I bought my own printing press and eventually quit my 9-5 job to pre-sue my drawing tycoon dream.

What are your main objectives with this business?

From the get go of bringing my production and printing in-house I wanted to maintain two objectives - A: to be as sustainable in my printing process as humanly possible – which carried over into every other aspect of my business – and B: To make my art prints as artistic as humanly possible while providing a quality product for folks to love and enjoy.

What were you doing in Tokyo? Is this your first time in Japan?

I had three main objectives while in Tokyo on this trip: to create new business contacts and opportunities – including distribution deals, create visible street art that interacts with its environment, and to ride my bike. This is my second trip to Japan. I’m glad to have learned the language a bit more and to know the geography way better thanks to walking around endlessly and riding my bike as much as humanly possible.

Did you see a lot of eco-apparel in Japan?

I saw a lot more eco-friendly efforts in many different regards all around Tokyo. I’m sure eco-apparel is around, and there were a few stores I went in to that were producing 100% Organic Cotton apparel. Eco-Apparel is a smaller category in the over-all scheme of industry in Tokyo, but the basic efforts in increasing general public awareness are a huge step forward in the right direction. Examples are all the public signage prompting recycling and re-using, seeing an Eco-Street in Harajuku off of Omotesando Dori, and researching to find out that Japan has the highest number of patents on eco-friendly products and technology in the world. All of these cast light on the concept of understanding and taking care of what we have. Even from my trip a year ago I was extremely impressed by the overall environmental awareness.

Since you’ve been to Tokyo twice now, what’s your advice? Likes/ dislikes?

My likes are how friendly people are – regardless of the language barrier, the food, hidden street art, how tightly packed everything is and the synergy of the city. My dislike is not being able to speak more Japanese to communicate. The subways are great, but my number one piece of advice is just to explore – don’t worry about getting lost because you can always find someone quickly to point you in the right direction.

You are a pretty prolific street artist, what are your views on street art/ graffiti?

Street art is very complicated and gets a lot of bad press. There are so many different types of art on the streets and for many different reasons. In a lot of ways it is ingrained in to our genetic DNA. Neanderthals painted on cave walls as a way to communicate and leave their mark. In my opinion it is as simple as that. Imagery & iconography cross all language barriers - they are universally understood regardless of background. Tagging is just that – a way to communicate and leave a mark behind. To me, that is the beginning of street art and it expands to every other mode including painting (throw-ups, pieces, murals), wheat pasting, and installations. There is no black and white in it, the concept is too gray in regards to what is right or wrong location-wise.
I have my own ethics that I live by when doing work on the streets. There is a lot that goes through my mind when choosing where to display my work and on what. Everyone is different in their opinions on what is acceptable. As far as I’m concerned, every city has a large amount of public space – this space should be utilized for art and culture. I don’t walk down the street to be besieged by advertisers everywhere I turn – that is not acceptable nor do I want to look at it in every clear space between buildings. If that is ok then there is space for my art installations too- which are there for others to enjoy and give people a reason to look up from their feet while walking down the street.

How do you come up with your drawings? What is your artistic process like?

Drawing for me is the same as breathing. I have disciplined myself to do it every day. From the smallest doodle that no one will ever see to my more complex drawings that I publish often. I listen and observe everything around me to pull ideas and concepts from. I study every composition I see for new styles, techniques and methods of drawing. My eyes have this terrible habit of just starring at people, places and things. At first I see them for what they are, then I immediately break them down in to shapes, texture and value as if I’m drawing them in my head. Once you become aware of it, you see it everywhere. If my drawings and art are not entertaining me – then I should not be doing them. In general, I laugh out loud at the simple stupid ideas that I draw.

Where do you get your inspiration? What other artists are you into?

Inspiration is everywhere – you just need to use your senses to become aware of it. Some of my art heroes are Robert Crumb, Jackson Pollock, Henry Darger, Ray Johnson, Jeffery Brown – but not limited to those. I find out about new artists daily that are producing incredible works. In a very, very nerdy way – I rent as many art films as I can get my hands on from Netflix. Tons of biographies, interviews, documentaries and featured films about other artists. It keeps me wanting to create all the time.

How often do you come out with new products?

During the past 6 years I have just randomly come out with new drawings that either folks have requested from my drawings or ones that entertain me. At this current time I have over 91 choices of artwork on my website – there are more in the past that I don’t offer any longer. I would say I add about 18 a year – so that is about 1.5 new printed drawings per month. Right now I’m doing seasonal themes for my artwork. Pretty pumped on the concept of themed artwork. For summer 2009 the themes are Bikes & Ocean. I’m very proud of how they turned out in both the original drawings and the screen printed versions.

Anything else you want people to know?

From here on out I want to see Partybots grow as an artistic endeavor, a business, and an inspiration to other artists. For me personally, I love the fact that I can officially draw for a living – it is really hard to explain exactly what I do for a living, but the simple answer is, “i draw a lot.” In addition to that, the process of screen printing has literally changed the method in which I draw. I have adapted my drawings to the concept behind multiple printed layers by utilizing stroke width – cross hatch, hatch & stippling to showcase texture and value.
My business and art it has taken me to places I never thought I would be able to go, to produce art internationally, and to meet amazing friends. I love doing what I’m doing. My dreams and hopes are to grow Partybots to the point where it is a vessel to help create all my other artistic endeavors. The best advice I can give to other artists is to just do what you do and produce your artwork.

Getting Ready, Leaving & Layovers

Sitting at the airport in Vancouver, Canada right now taking advantage of the free WIFI.

I wanted to post about my pre-leaving for Tokyo but did not have a chance. So now that I have the time - here we go.

Thursday the 10th slept for 3 hours then back up at 6am. Started my online marketing routine and got my stuff together to run two errands in the morning. My errands turned in to three as the morning progressed. Rode my bike from West Seattle down to SODO to the freewall. Had this drawing in mind that I wanted to give a whirl to paint. Quick hustle down there partially thanks to Relationship Of Command loudly in my ear.

At the freewall I used two colors - this baby soft blue I'm really in to right now and black. Did my fill - uneven per the norm. Why is it so hard to have two sides of a drawing or anything match up? I don't know the science behind it, but I'm assuming there are some wizards behind the conspiracy. Once the fill was done I went in with black. Messed up the eyes, quickly so I had to re-paint with the fill - wait then try again. That is the nice thing about paint - you just do it over and over till you get it. Cutting in here and there to clean up your lines and work. Within no time it was outline and filled in. Pretty happy with. Once I was done I started thinking of how I could improve it - something I do to all my art projects. Constant progression.

Rode to downtown to get yen from WellsFargo for my trip. It's nice being able to just walk in and not get charged anything but the exchange rate. Way to make it easy el banko. After leaving I rode around to the spots that have polar bears on poles and took pictures. One was next to Cherry Street Coffee next to the SAM. As I was riding I saw AJ in the shop and stopped to say hello. He is a super nice guy - bought me a shirt because he thought I would like it. And I did - it was amazing. Finished with downtown taking pictures and rode home.

More computer work - processing online orders and some marketing that I do. Posted a picture of the polar bears in downtown on notcot.org. They posted on their site and featured it. (did not find this out till the next day) Super pumped to see it on that website.

Right as I was finishing up online work it was around noon and my shirts came. And I mean a lot of them. 6 wholesale orders and a TON of online orders. I went to work separating out the blanks and pulling them for all the orders. Banged out the first batch quickly - all one colors had my printing press pre-set-up. Printed all the way till 11pm. My friend Trisha was sewing in labels along with at times my roommates Sarah and Jessica. In addition to their help - Robin came by after work and stayed nearly till midnight helping keep things organized and packing the orders as the shirts were printed and their labels sewn in. The bottom line - I would not have go everything done if it were not for all four of them. I have amazing friends - and appreciate everything they do for me. I did not stop working till 2am. So a long, long day - yes.

I had an hour or so to get my bike taken apart, packed, showered and out the door to pick up JC. I have never packed this lightly for a trip which makes me super happy. Not counting my bike - which is relatively light weight. Trisha drove JC and I to the airport - went in and got on our plane. Flew here to Canada - walked around, took some photos and now posting.

Maybe a nap is due before we leave to Narita.

Photo Shoot: Todays photo shoot went very well. The kids that came out to model were amazing, lucky to have them. Oh, and the two photographers were Trisha and Robin. Addison Art Project - 2008: Book Cover

I'm nearly done with my book: Addison Art Project - 2008. Here is the cover artwork for it; it has gone through a lot of changes over the past 5-6 months since I started working on this. This book is going to be self published until I can shop it around for a publisher that I would like to print and carry this book.

I have done this every year for the past three years. In the past these have been smaller, zine like and super DIY. This year, I have so many drawings I wanted to do a full on perfect bound book and have a release party for it. I'm currently working on the release party location & date. But trust me, it will be awesome. I'm proud to say this book will have a bit more then just my drawings. There is some very personal writing in it, along with BLOG entries, write-ups and other various sources. The chapters are broken up in to months. A lot of cropping is used.

idrawalot.com - we re-done it

As this happens, and I knew it would a long time ago. I re-did my idrawalot.com website. Narrowed it down to a good 40 selection of my work. The re-tooled purpose is to start submitting my illustrations and drawings to Getty Images. I draw so much, they jut lay around collecting dust in my archival books. It would be mega sweet to be picked up, and have my work utilized a bit more to start making royalties off them. Plus, this is a much cleaner look to get an idea of my work and ability to put ink to paper (for better or worse).

Its a passion, its a love affair

I'm addicted to making my environment a place I want to look at and live in. My eyes are dying with all the advertising everywhere I look from major corporations. I want to look at something else for a change, I want to look at a piece of art on the streets in the most random of places. I want art to interact with their environment, change the way folks view their neighborhoods. I want a reason to look up or down the street instead of at my feet.

"I'm part of the problem"

First and foremost, drawing is fun. Period, hands down, without a doubt. What makes it better is doing it with a buddy/amigo/friend. Last night Starheadboy and I drew for a few hours. It was a good time, we talked about all sorts of funny topics. Like soccer-mom art, accounts wanting to quit their jobs and "being part of the problem." Which is the opposite then being part of the solution, and rightfully hilarious. Below are a few drawings of mine while the night progressed.

Arbor Day - Plant A Tree

Giving Back - That's What We do:

I have been working with the good folks at Zebraclub to give back. I'm super thrilled to be teaming up with them to plant some trees and get folks pumped on Arbor Day this year.

What We Are Doing: Zebraclub and Partybots will donate 20% of proceeds made from any Partybots purchase at all Zebraclub locations from April 13 through April 24. The money raised will go towards planting trees and is being donated to the local, non-profit organization Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.

iNVASiON - The Aftermath

All 100% worth the hard work to get this show completed and installed. Nearly 200 people showed up and came in and out throughout the night. Everyone went nuts over the stickers I made and had available. The other un-expected highlight was the windows. Folks could not get over them, and talked about it all night. Due to the medium used, they created a strong bold cast shadow against the wall. One of those "happenstance" effects that turned to radical in .01 seconds.

Thanks to EVERYONE who came out. Special thanks to the girls at Twilight for their support and help. Thanks to Justin, Anna & Ryan for your help with production. I would not have had all the work done if it was not for your support.

Day One of Installation: Room Is Built!

Got up fairly early, pumped out some more promotion then down to my studio to crank out on more of these pieces. Got a lot of the detail work painted, two frames painted and loaded my little truck up with 11 doors (That shit is heavy.)

Loaded the doors in to Twilight one by one. Figured out the order and went to town on the installing. Thanks to Erin's help it was fairly easy to get it all put together. Now back to getting the rest of the wood installations completed and the windows done.

Oh, I'm nearly at a 1,000 individual hand cut out, and hand wheat pasted one by one boxes. Serious... that is a lot of boxes for this show.

Last night was cold as all get out. Even with that being the case Justin and I went on a little ride from Gasworks to Ballard. It wasn't far - but we picked up the pace and rode.

Mini adventures are sometimes the best. We stopped in for a drink at Kings and had a good heart to heart. I'm happy to know that bikes can bring folks together.

Photoshoot - It Was Perfect!

I had a lot of fun doing this photo shoot with Jodi. She came all the way from New York. Just kidding, she was here anyways visiting her family - just good timing. The lighting was perfect and balanced and the location was crisp and perfect. I'm really bad about giving modeling direction, so she just did her thing and it worked out amazingly.

New product will be posted on the website shortly. I'm pretty pumped on these new combinations. They all turned out great. These are also available at the Whole Foods Market in Roosevelt Square, Seattle Washington and Whole Foods Market in Bellevue Washington. The photos were from their orders that got shipped out.

NOTCOT.org - Kind of a big deal

Yeah, so this is a pretty big deal to me. NOTCOT.org is a pretty amazing website that has some really impressive featured artist on it. Friends like Derek Albeck have been featured on it among many others. A very pretty girl named Allison O’Connor has this great BLOG called 24:00. She was the one to snap the shot, wrote the BLOG and submit it. From there NOTCOT.org thought it was rad enough to put on their front page.

As of right now I'm still in shock over it. I have some large installations going up this weekend, and this makes me want to go do WAY more now. She even got a picture of one of my mustache boxed installations. So freakin awesome!

Our bikes were stolen at about 7:30 pm Fri 2/6 in front of the Ballard Goodwill. My bike is a silver Marin track bike (50cm) with a black stickered spengel tri-spoke in front. It had drop bars wrapped in blue, and the downtube and toptube were wrapped in flourescent yellow duct tape. Felix’s bike was pink, about 60cm, with custom paintings all over. It had pink powdercoated handlebars and seatpost. The wheels were black deep vs with pink iro hubs. the wheels were wrapped in pink and yellow duct tape. Bikes, Art, Sandwich & Typography

Tonight was our thursday night ride. We went to the Pioneer Art Walk and hung out for a bit. I like the Western Building a lot. Got to see my friend Dave (check out his work at Starheadboy) and talk to him for a bit. I'm going to pick up one of his painted bricks. I did not have much cash or a bag with me tonight. They are super awesome and can not wait to add it to my art collection. After the ride we went up to the Honey Hole on Capitol Hill to meet up with Domino, his lady and their friend from New York. I had a tasty sandwich for dinner with tempeh; so good. At that point I rode back down to Pioneer Square to catch up with my friend Mary at some fashion party thing. Then back home and up Avalon. I love hate that hill.

My night is going to be finished off working on this freelance job I got for a supplement company. Holy crap! I forgot how much I love typography and cleaning type up. With my own work I don't do anything with type, and I feel like with my old corporate job that is almost all I did. Funny how those things creep up on you. I'm making the design tighter and tiny bit cleaner. It is good for the purpose of it. So only minor tweaks. I'm also setting it up for printing and cropping. It's time consuming for sure, but I do miss this kind of work. To be honest, it is so easy for me... I think that is why I like. It involves almost zero effort for me, just busy work like an assembly line. That might sound weird for a semi-creative process but it is true. I'm going to be stoked to go in to some of the supplement stores around town and see them up and out.

A little printing, data entry, bikes and stickers

This morning was a little hard to get out of bed. I can happily say that since I have been riding my bike every single day my insomnia is gone... not counting right now since I'm still awake.

My online orders have picked up in the second half of the month. Thank goodness for that. I know it is a scary time with the economy. Its a pleasure to know that folks still want rad dorky drawings on eco-friendly apparel. Hooray! Shipped out 5 orders today. Got some data entry done and even had time to start working on some new stickers. I need to get a new Sharpie thou, the one I have is a fine point. I like the detail, but my lines are way to thin for me liking.

My evening ended with Ryan, Ian and I going on a bike ride around the city ending at Flowers in the U-District. It was a good ride, a little slower then last week but we also tracked up a lot of hills. An hour and 27 minutes of solid non-stop riding. It was nice to hang out at Flowers since Bubba and Koos showed up. Both of those kids are super amazing. I have all these ideas of drawings in my head based on bikes now. I'm sure I will be thinking about this for the next three months before I sit down and start drawing. That is generally my process with this type of thought in regards to drawing and planning.

Tomorrow I have more printing to get done and hopefully I will have time to upload new product to my website. Officially - there are 87 choices of my dorky drawing. Closing in on 100... then it is party time.

I have another art show coming in the summer, I finalized my concept for it this week. The show will be called "A 100 Reasons." I kind of want to keep this show sort of a mystery only to be unveiled on opening night. More on that later, want to get the iNVASiON show done first at Twilight in April before I start putting a lot of time on this next show.

More on the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act - PT.2

Last week I wrote about this, because this new law being enforced by the CPSIA is just up-surd. A friend sent me this article and I feel it sheds a lot more light to the stupidity and danger of this law. The dangers for small business is enormous in both practicality and cost. Not only that but this law does not grandfather product that is already on the shelf now or before Feb 10th. So all product must be removed until certified by this third party.

I'm both appalled and sad by the overall impact of this. It might force me to shut down my Kids and Toddler line plus lose several stores that are all children apparel boutiques. The impact for my own business is going to be huge. My hope is that both my suppliers for my apparel and printing products certification will be enough to allow me to continue selling. Or, Congress wakes up and realizes what a terrible idea this is.

IF Congress doesn't act quickly, tens of thousands of Americans will lose their jobs - and several hundred New York businesses will get hit particularly hard.

The problem is the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which Congress passed overwhelmingly last year because of fears about lead in toys from China. Bizarrely, the law threatens US-based children's clothing makers as well as toy makers - and even libraries. Its staggering, unintended consequences have prompted outrage from everyone from "mommy-bloggers" to some environmentalists.

In the name of safety, the law imposes absurd standards and insane testing requirements. These aren't based on science, but on political hysteria - and they're a major burden on business. In this recession, they could close down countless companies whose products are perfectly safe.

One example: The law not only requires testing of components of children's clothing for tiny levels of lead, but also separate testing of each different style of clothes, even if made from the same materials.

What's worse, the Consumer Product Safety Commission interprets the law to apply to kid's clothing retroactively. So products already en route to stores - even if they contain no lead - will be illegal to sell after Feb. 10 if they haven't been tested.

Wal-Mart is telling its suppliers that everything it has in stock that hasn't already been tested must be out of stores by Feb. 1 - even if that means sending the stuff back to suppliers.

This is creating chaos for everyone involved in making and selling children's items. Unless Congress acts now, tens of millions of dollars worth of safe children's clothing will be destroyed - and that's from New York City clothing makers alone.

Dozens of small, family-owned New York businesses, already struggling, will shut down and/or lay off their workers. The city could lose a quarter to a half of its 8,000 garment-industry jobs within weeks. Cory Silverstein of Kids Headquarters on 34th Street fears he may have to lay off close to 100 of his 600 employees in the city.

Meanwhile, the test requirements will make children's clothing more expensive.

Opponents of this "safety" law include not just businesses but activists like Chicago writer and environmentalist Manda Aufochs Gillespie, a.k.a. "the Green Mama." She writes that it "has made things much harder than they need to be": Even products that already meet much-stricter organic-certification requirements, as well as European Union standards, are not exempt from the "safety" testing requirements.

Companies like Chapter One Organics are also angry - because big business can absorb the costs and pass them along to consumers, while smaller companies will be forced out of business.

The law's onerous testing requirements may even apply to children's books. If so, until every single children's book is certified safe, libraries would be off-limits to children. So the American Library Association is lobbying for a quick fix to exempt libraries from the law.

But the law is so fundamentally flawed that it can't just be tweaked - it must be repealed. Then, Congress can consider a more science-based approach to safety that protects children without destroying whole industries.

The immediate need, however, is for Congress to simply delay the law from taking effect. If it doesn't act now, thousands of small businesses will close and consumers will pay more for everything they buy their kids.

The Daily

Today was chill, rode home this morning which took me longer then I wanted to due to the rain and mild snow on the ground. Did not prepare for it so I was pretty frozen, wet and cold when I arrived home. Spent the rest of my afternoon and day doing detail work on the new wood installations that are being installed tomorrow and doing data mining. The data mining is alright, but it needs to be done. Trying to find more stores that I can sell my dorky drawings to. Found out that two of my stores are closing their doors. Bummer, they are great people and deserve to stay open.

There is a good possibility that I will also need to find part time work which I already started looking in to. Unless a miracle happens and I land some rad huge account that will keep my production alive during this economic downturn.

Today was really good. Feels good to get things done and working towards my goals in life. Did not get to draw... my only regret of the day.

I got up pretty early this morning to finish up the installations that are going in to Gorditos in Greenwood. I have not figured out how many of these I'm putting in. But I figure what I don't I will use else where. There are two more polar bears, three gorilla men, four eagles carrying a little girl and three sharks wearing a jean jacket. A good amount for sure.

The rest of my afternoon I posted new products on my website and worked on emails. I think I'm going to spend the rest of the evening posting product. By the time I get done with today it will be another 15 hour plus day. I wouldn't be doing all of this if I did not love what I do for a living.

Invasion Artwork - Rad Print

First off, I'm very very happy with this artwork. Second off, I'm even more happy about the printing of it. It nearly wraps around the base of the shirt - so it gets a little intense. These are all based on some dorky drawings I have been doing a lot. I drew this set on the plane heading to Chicago last year. Hope you enjoy it!

Art Installation at Gorditos in Seattle

This morning Omar and I went and Installed these at Gorditos for an installation piece. There are three Mr. Stemke 4ft Polar Bears currently. However, I will be making some more based on other drawings this week. They have a lot of wall space. These were the three I could bust out to bring them now.

The installation will be up for the next two months. Gorditos is an amazing mexican food joint in Greenwood with delicious BABY SIZED burritos. No joke...

New Product Photos

I pumped out three orders for the Whole Foods Market in Roosevelt Square, Whole Foods Market in Lamar, and Neighborhood in California today. The lighting was perfect and was able to get some product shots today as well. Tons more will be posted on my site, or you can go to my gallery page to see them. Feels good to see it as a finished product.

Children Product Law.. a third part joke?

Can I just say what the fuck? I found out about this today and I'm completely speechless. How are small business suppose to deal with this? Third part regulation on this is a fucking joke. How is this even going to be regulated or policed by a third party in the first place? Is this part of a micro-management bureaucratically wet-dream? I'm all for keeping kids and children safe. I would not be striving for environmental sustainability in the first place if I did not give a shit about my fellow human being or the world we line within. This is on par with giving Robert Murdoc control of the FDA. It does not make sense and is completely ridiculous.

Mandatory Third-Party Testing for Certain Children’s Products

Section 102 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act

(“CPSIA”)

The Commission staff invites comments on Section 102 of the CPSIA, Mandatory Third-

Party Testing for Certain Children’s Products. The staff requests comments specifically on

third-party testing of component parts.

CPSIA section 102(a)(2) imposes testing requirements to support certificates of compliance

for “children's products'' as defined in section 235(a) of the CPSIA (to be codified at section

3(a)(2) of the Consumer Product Safety Act). Ninety days after the Commission issues those

requirements for a given product or category of products on the rolling schedule specified in

section 14(a)(3), the certificate for the product or products in question manufactured after that

date must be supported by testing performed by a third-party laboratory whose accreditation

has been accepted by the Commission absent the Commission's exercise of its authority to

extend such a deadline by an additional sixty days in certain instances. Given the schedule

for implementation of the third-party testing requirements, the staff is interested in comments

and information regarding:

• How the risk of introducing non-compliant product into the marketplace would be

affected by permitting third-party testing of the component parts of a consumer

product versus third-party testing of the finished consumer product.

• The conditions and or circumstances, if any, that should be considered in allowing

third-party testing of component parts.

• The conditions, if any, under which supplier third-party testing of raw materials or

components should be acceptable.

• Assuming all component parts are compliant, what manufacturing processes

and/or environmental conditions might introduce factors that would increase the

risk of allowing non-compliant consumer products into the marketplace.

• Whether and how the use and control of subcontractors would be affected by

allowing the third-party testing of component parts.

• What changes in inventory control methods, if any, should be required if thirdparty

testing of component parts were permitted. Address receipt, storage and

quality control of incoming materials, management and control of work-inprocess,

non-conforming material control, control of rework, inventory rotation,

and overall identification and control of materials.

• How a manufacturer would manage lot-to-lot variation of component parts, in a

third-party testing of component parts regime, to ensure finished consumer

products are compliant.

• Whether consideration of third-party testing of component parts should be given

for any particular industry groups or particular component parts and materials.

Explain what it is about these industries, component parts, and/or materials that

make them uniquely suited to this approach.

Comments must be received by the Office of the Secretary no later than January 30, 2009.

I Really Miss Painting
