Two New Drawings - And A Little Bit Of CoLOR

A couple of months ago I BLOGGED about the use of color and how I love it... but have fallen away from it since adopting my drawing style of black and white. Well, after thinking about it a lot, rolling around with color theory in my head I have put it to use. Below is one of my first attempts of this. To be perfectly honest, I'm very thrilled with the results and now I'm wondering why I did not start doing this sooner. More to come... be sure of that!

Los Angeles Store Visit

While I was in Los Angeles two weekends ago I had a little time to drop in to three of my stores in the area. Let me tell you, all three were awesome to visit. The first store I visited was Menemsha on Ventura Blvd. The girls in this store were so sweet and nice. I'm super glad they found me and wanted to order my eco-friendly apparel line. The second store I went to was Eden's Green Closet. Emily is the owner of this childeren's eco-friendly boutique. She was mega sweet and had a great set-up of apparel. Both new and re-used, recycled. The last store I made my way in to was Neighborhood on Abbot Kinney Blvd. Joshua is the owner/manager of this store and it was very nice to meet him. Great little store with lots of great apparel. Glad to be a part of their inventory.

Three New Drawings

Here are three new drawings. The top one is for my America series, and I drew it while I was in Brooklyn over the weekend. The bottom two are from Los Angeles - the previous weekend from this last one.

Come to Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn This Weekend

Brooklyn's 4th Annual RENEGADE CRAFT FAIR!! This year's event will be held June 14 + 15 from 11am - 7pm at the McCarren Park Pool!

POVevolving Gallery - Opening Night

My hat goes off to Jeremy and all the folks that made POVevolving Gallery an amazing success on it's opening night. Everyone that showed had amazing pieces. The theme of the show was "Hello Comrade, bring a friend." I had a few of my smaller illustrations in the show, but most importantly my friend Amy had some amazing pinhole photography.

Weird to be back in Los Angeles

It is a little odd and surreal to be back in Los Angeles.  So far, it has been pretty fun.  I'm staying with two of my really good friends Amy and Marinda.  They have this little cabin style house in some crazy part of San Fernando that I have never been to.  It is nice, because it does not feel like the city.

I drew a little bit last night and this morning.  Last night I drew this little man who was telling Marinda that she is "drunk."  I thought it was pretty funny, and so did the rest of us.  

Today Amy and I are going out to check on my three stores around town that sell my apparel and then we are going out to take photos.  Amy is an amazing photographer and has all these insane old cameras.

American Babies & Cowboys Drawings

Here is the third drawing in my American Series, this baby took a little longer then planned. I really feel strongly about the concept that it holds. I can not wait to get started on the next piece in this series.

The other drawing was just a fun little box that I wanted to draw because I like cowboys... not to fond of Cactus. I always get pricked by them no matter where they are to me.

I can't even tell you how stoked I'm to announce this. For a few months I have been working with this great company called Etchstar.com. You can now go to their website and purchase things like iPods, iMacs, Moleskines, etc... then have my original drawings etched on to the product.

First and foremost, I'm all for being a cognizant consumer. You can either purchase one of the products straight from their site, then add my artwork. Or, you can even send your goodies to them, and they can etch on it. It adds a uniquely artistic and cultured touched to something that you will use everyday.

Lots of new Drawings!

I was thinking about how I have not had a whole lot of time to draw lately. Some of these drawings have been sitting next to my scanner for a few weeks now. Last night was the first chance I got to work on this a little bit. I started a new Obese American series of illustrations and drawings. Those drawings are below, a little brutal - but there is a lot of truth in it.

Back from Tokyo!

Today is my second Wednesday. How is that possible, well it is easy... I'm a time traveler. There was a lot to this trip. Both in very good and amazing ways that will change the way I view the world forever. And of course very upsetting and frustrating things that happened. Being there, I quickly felt ill-prepared and very naive.

Design Festa was the main reason I went. The show was incredible from the stand point of its production value, the other artist there and the shear size. As for my business, I did not do well. The little Japanese I know was not near enough to explain me art to anyone. Speaking in broken Japanese and English for two days was one of the most mentally exhausting things I have ever done. I can not even tell you how much we take advantage of the ability to communicate with each other.

Japanese culture is one of the most beautiful and polite cultures I have been exposed to. The folks that I did meet and talk to were so very nice and pleasant. On my last night I was finally able to socialize a lot and that night was the best for me. I also met some really amazing folks from all over the world. The girl below with me is from Finland and she was very sweet, as were all the people I talked to.

The art scene there was everywhere. But not as we think of it here in the US. Street art is just part of the natural landscape of the city. There were paintings almost everywhere. At Design Festa I purchased a few different paintings - one is the below picture with the yellow background and an amazing painted illustrated style. The colors were bold, line work was incredible and subject matter was border line strange with a twist of "kawaii." The signs everywhere had an amazing art undertone as well. Even the ones about safety.

It was an incredible trip, and one that I learned a lot from. It is a different game that I have been playing from a business standpoint. One that I will play again for sure in the future, but I have a lot more to learn in order to be successful over there.
